Moissanite (compared to diamonds)
Durability
Diamonds are the hardest natural material, scoring 10 on the Mohs scale, making them extremely resistant to scratching. Moissanite is also very durable, with a hardness of 9.25–9.5, and has the added advantage of being less prone to chipping because it lacks the pronounced cleavage planes that diamonds have. Both stones are suitable for daily wear.
Brilliance and Fire
Moissanite has a higher refractive index (2.65) and dispersion (0.104) than diamonds (refractive index 2.42, dispersion 0.044), which gives it a more colourful “rainbow” sparkle. Diamonds reflect whiter light and have a crisper, more traditional brilliance. Moissanite’s double refraction can create a slight doubling effect in larger stones, noticeable to trained eyes.
Value
Moissanite is lab created so they offer better value than natural diamonds, as they can be mass produced.
